AN OVERVIEW
The Healthcare Challenge
Of Chronic Wounds
Non-healing wounds affects an estimated 1 out of 20 people worldwide, with Singapore having one of the highest rates of amputations. Chronic wounds are more prevalent within the elderly due to underlying conditions such as diabetes and, cardiovascular and peripheral vascular diseases.
What are chronic wounds?
Wounds that show signs of poor healing or doesn’t heal within an extended range of time are considered chronic. They are often related to an underlying disorder and hence, unlikely to heal on its own without medical attention.
EXAMPLES OF CHRONIC WOUNDS INCLUDES:
- Diabetic foot ulcers
- Gangrene
- Arterial and venous ulcers
- Pressure ulcers
- Infected wounds
- Traumatic wounds
- Non-healing wounds
Impact and Complications
Chronic wounds affects a patient’s quality of life with pain and emotional distress. When left untreated or not gotten the appropriate care, chronic wounds can progress to complications like late-stage gangrene, which may require amputation.
Seeking Relevant Treatment
Because chronic wound cases are complex and can be due to multiple underlying factors, there are situations where patients could be referred to specialists which may not have the relevant expertise. An example would be referring a patient with a venous leg ulcer to a non-vascular specialist.
